One bad egg? How about 380 Million!

Ah…Salmonella.  A subject distantly near and nowhere dear to my gastrointestinal tract.   Tuesday, the CDC and FDA came down on a small *cough* egg production facility in Iowa, after suspecting some 380 MILLION eggs may have been contaminated with salmonella. CNN Reports, “Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa, is voluntarily recalling some of its eggs out of concern they may be tainted with salmonella bacteria.”  Now, it’s going to take awhile for the CDC and FDA to finalize their investigation, as it’s JUST begun.  The CDC’s Feature, Tips to Reduce Your Risk of Salmonella from Eggs is great in telling you, the Fetid Eater how to avoid it in the home, however, here’s some scary parts of the story;

“The Associated Press estimated the total recalled at 228 million eggs, although the company in question, Wright County Egg of Galt, Iowa, wouldn’t confirm it.” – MSNBC.com

“So far, clusters of illnesses linked to eggs have been confirmed in at least three states, California, Colorado and Minnesota, federal health officials said Tuesday. In California, tainted eggs have sickened at least 266 people, Los Angeles County health officer Dr. Jonathan Fielding told reporters Tuesday.” - MSNBC.com

The CDC states that “the illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without antibiotic treatment.”

The logistics of the investigation alone is going to be daunting.  What IS trackable is the lot numbers on the cartons.  What ISN’T trackable is how many individuals or small-time bakers, caterers, etc., have used the eggs and thrown out the cartons?!?!  Just thinking about it is making me…  check out http://www.eggsafety.org

Trivial Facts:

A single hen lays a single egg every 24-26 hours, so even conservatively;

5×52 (weeks) = about 260 eggs a year

Potential Recall:  380 MILLION !  Wright County Egg has to house 1.4615 Million hens just to produce that amount of eggs FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR!

UPDATE: In case you missed it in the CDC Alerts, The recall’s gone national READ MORE

    Last I read, its to 550 mil.

    “In response to the outbreak that has led to a recall of about 550 million eggs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration examined the Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms and noted in a report this week that inspectors found rodents, wild birds, seeping manure and maggots in the operations there.”
